    Week 1: Cutting

    in English Purdy Bird QAL

The most exciting part of starting a new project - cutting! Do you have all your fabrics picked? Your blades sharpened? Are you ready to go?

So, how do you usually like to cut for a quilt pattern?

    • I cut everything before I start the first stich

    • I''m super organized and label everything - even my labels 😉

    • I cut for each block as I go

    • It's pure chaos when the blades come out ✂️

Be sure to check your mailboxes for the Purdy Bird QAL newsletter, Week 1: Cutting!

I was confused too! My template ended up too big to fit on the 13” length of fabric as shown on the background cutting diagram. Will just use a bigger piece of fabric!

    Thank you

Sorry for the confusion. I have corrected the pattern and listed it in the pattern corrections. Since we are trimming the block, you still might be able to make it work.

Help. My taped XXL template measures 13.5 x13.5. I printed at 100% and my control block measures exactly one inch. What am I doing wrong?

Absolutely nothing... that is correct! We trim the XXL DP unit later in order to get the 1/4" seam allowance on the L-unit. 😉

So, should I just let 1/4 inch of my template overhang on both the top and bottom of the 13” fabric strip to “split the difference”?

@machelle.watkins That could work. You may have to adjust a bit on the curve unit, but since there is plenty of room for trimming, it should still come out. Sorry about the mistake. I have corrected it now on the pattern, and listed it in the pattern corrections.

In cutting the standard drunkard path pieces, do you use one single paper template to make all the fabric cuts, or you print and prepare a paper template for each fabric cut? As hard as I try to be exact in cutting the curved area with my rotary cutter, I occasionally nick the paper. I’m worried my last fabric cuts won’t be as exact. Thoughts?

I usually use one template, and those knicks are usally minimal. If you are concerned about cutting, you could make one sturdy cardstock / cardboard template and use it for all of your cutting.
